When choosing between Protektor DR vs SLT, the difference comes down to one thing: exposure level. CBR Products makes both as waterborne, natural oil, low-VOC penetrating stains in BC, but each is formulated for a different application. Understanding which product fits your project will ensure the best result and the longest-lasting finish.
The BRODA lineup from CBR Products includes two penetrating stain systems, Protektor DR and Protektor SLT. Each is engineered for a specific exposure condition. Choosing the right one starts with understanding where and how your wood faces the elements.
Protektor DR is a waterborne, natural oil finish for fully exposed architectural wood. Use it on decks, railings, fences, fascia, pergolas, patio furniture, and high-exposure siding. If your wood takes direct sun, rain, and heavy weather, DR is the right choice.
In addition, DR penetrates deeply into the wood and provides superior protection against water, UV rays, and environmental elements. The finish is durable and breathable, sheeting water off the surface while allowing moisture to evaporate, which is critical for long-term wood stability. It will not crack, peel, or blister.

Protektor SLT is a waterborne, natural oil finish for semi-exposed architectural wood. Use it on wood siding, log walls, log structures, timber framing, soffits, and sidewall shingles. These surfaces see weather but do not take the same direct exposure as a horizontal deck.
Furthermore, SLT contains a higher natural oil content for wood stabilization. This reduces warping, shrinking, and checking, which are common issues in log and timber applications where wood movement is a bigger factor. UV protection, mold and mildew resistance, and a breathable finish are all included.

In addition to their individual strengths, both DR and SLT use the same 3-coat system: two coats of tinted stain followed by a Clear UV Topcoat. The topcoat enhances durability, creates a fuller medium luster finish, and maximizes colour retention. Future maintenance is simple since you only reapply the clear coat, with no colour matching required.
Similarly, preparation is the same for both products. Clean with Broda Wood Wash, sand with 60 to 80 grit sandpaper, and make sure the surface is free of dust, dirt, grease, wax, and existing coatings. Do not apply below 5°C or above 25°C, and avoid application if rain or freezing temperatures are expected within 48 hours.
Fully exposed to the elements, decks, railings, fences, pergolas, use Protektor DR. Semi-exposed surfaces, siding, log homes, timber framing, soffits, use Protektor SLT.
